Question 122: What is the first petition? Answer: Hallowed be Thy name. That is: grant us, first, rightly to know Thee1, and to sanctify, glorify and praise Thee in all Thy works, in which Thy power, wisdom, goodness, justice, mercy and truth shine forth2; further also, that we may so order and direct our whole life, thoughts, words and actions, that Thy name may not be blasphemed but honored and praised on our account3. 1 John 17:3 "And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent."Jer. 9: 24 , "but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD." Jer. 31:33,34, But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Matt. 16:17 "And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father which is in heaven." James 1:5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." Psa. 119,105, Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. 2 Psa. 119:137, "Righteous art Thou, O LORD, and upright are Thy judgments. Thy testimonies that Thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful."Luke 1:46,47; 68,69,"And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. ... Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; " Psa. 145:8, 9 "The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and His tender mercies are over all His works." Rom. 11:33, O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable [are] his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 3 Psa. 71:8"Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise and with Thy honour all the day."Psa. 115: 1,"Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory, for Thy mercy, and for Thy truth's sake." |
